Benefits of a Doula
A recent systematic review examined how the impact of labor support changes depending on who provides it. The study found that the biggest benefits occur when the supporter is neither a hospital employee nor someone from the laboring person’s personal network. Compared with women who received no continuous support, those who had a companion such as a doula experienced the following improvements:
- • 28% lower chance of having a cesarean section
- • 31% lower chance of receiving synthetic oxytocin (used to speed up labor)
- • 9% lower chance of using any pain medication
- • 34% lower chance of rating the birth experience negatively
